Dave,
You should apply a small dollop to the ac plugs (male), inside the IEC connectors (either the female or the male end), and fuses (remove and wipe on the fuse contact area). Don't even try inside live ac sockets, let's be sane here. I just squeeze a small amount out on the surface in question and then smear it around a bit with my finger tips leaving behind a thin film. Helps to remove any excess as well. A bit harder to do on IEC (male or female ends) due to limited space. Try just a small blob inside each of the tips on the female IEC or on the openings for the male side, hoping that when you plug it in, it will spread out. Hey this is not rocket science, just a simple and inexpensive tweak that helps the ac to flow a bit cleaner. I "speculate" that what is happening is that the grease helps to eliminate any "micro" arcing between the two surfaces which could present itself as "noise." Cleaner contacts. Seems reasonable and it does work by music becoming a bit smoother and cleaner, but hey I'm no expert. Just another joe like you.
