I found similar value non-polarized electrolytic capacitors in my 20+
year old AR-11 speakers; I think those are typical values for a four ohm impedance speaker. The chokes were air core and resistors generic sandcast types.I found these speakers at a Goodwill for $18; the woofer surrounds were shot, but were not particulary difficult to repair. While I
had the speakers open, I took a look at the crossover network.
I replaced the tweeter and midrange capacitors with Solen polypropylenes; for the woofer Zobel(?) cap I tried out a high-voltage plastic 100uF cap with a 20 uF Solen in parallel, but otherwise I wouldn't bother with the woofer cap unless I knew a lot more than I do about crossover design. If your speakers are using non-polarized electrolytics, it might be worth replacing at least the midrange and tweeters with whatever polypropylene capacitors you can afford. Possibly bypass lower-cost
Solens with premium 1uF or 2uF caps. After that, maybe replace the
crossover resistors with quality wirewounds like Mills or even bulk
foil/film power resistors (see the Michael Percy catalog).Has anyone done extensive crossover tweaking of older Acoustic Research speakers?
