Re: Active Crossover-Have I Reached the Limits?

208.180.30.253

I haven't modified my XM9 quite to the limits that you have, but I have done some things that you haven't so far, and might want to consider:

--replace the factory feet with spikes or cones of your choice. I'm using arrow points right now, but will probably change to Mitchell Tenderfeet sometime soon. This made a major improvement in my case.

--coat the chassis with vibration dampening material. I cleaned out my chassis with alcohol and sprayed all the internal surfaces with Dynashield, which is a vibration absorbing compound that's available from car audio dealers. It's basically "dynamat in a can". I did this to my crossover's enclosure before assembling it, so I can't claim a before-and-after change on my unit, but for only $10, I think it was highly worthwhile. My XM9L's cabinet is totally dead resonance-wise.

--upgrade the internal wire to your choice of "audiophile wire". I used Kimber TCSS, though I'm sure other wires would work just as well or better.

--if you have the XM9 as opposed to the "XM9L" deluxe version, I suggest upgrading the I/O connectors on the rear of the unit.

I'm sure that you can expect at least a minor benefit from implementing the above modifications.

I have a question for you though...I'd like to upgrade the potentiometers on my XM9L to either high-end pots, or stepped attenuators. However, the unit has 10 pots, and it'd be very cost prohibitive, for me at least, to install ten $100+ attenuators. I was wondering if you (or anyone else) might know of some good pots or stepped attenuators that would work in this application (to replace 10 k linear taper pots) which don't cost more than around $40 or so each.
