I don't think anyone is questioning the use of ferrites, there is nothing magical about them, however for them to be of any use they are required to be wired into the circuit. Hanging them from the nearest available power point won't, I'm afraid, do.APM all of the questions you asked above can be answered, as I recall they were all fairly straight forward, but I'm not sure what would be achieved by doing so. You say you've somehow copied a commercial unit, with modifications. I have no doubt that many of the expensive "filters" are little more than a ferrite in a box with a very big price tag attached. They will work to suppress line noise, but you could do the same thing (quite safely) at home for very little cost. However what you have suggested is quite a different animal to what is being sold commercially, given that you have removed the effective component from the circuit.
I do wonder whether some people have seen them ferrites used in applications but have misunderstood how they should be wired. As a rule of thumb, an inductor (which is what a ferrite is being used for) goes in series with the power, a capacitor goes in parallel.
Once again I'm concerned that people who clearly have no idea about techincal issues are freely dispensing advice, which included the recommended voltage rating for capacitors on 240V mains! I'm left wondering how those people arrived at those recommended ratings. Passing on experiences is one thing, advice like this is quite another.
Nevertheless, as others have said, it's your system, and your lives, I've had my say so I'll back right off. If you believe this works, then that's fine. Please consider though that there is a group of people, many of whom are quite well qualified in this field, who are strongly questioning the validity of this "tweak". The links provided to support the theory of the device are totally unrelated, and we are dealing with MAINS power here.
Good luck to you all with your experimenting.
Pete
