Michell Engineering used to use the LT317/337. After the
split of its designers (Tom Evans went solo, Graham Fowler
remained wit Michell/Trichord), the LTs were only used
in primary regulation, with the regulation close to the amps
done by:
1) the fully discrete Lithos regulation board (TE Design)
2) an AD-797 with discrete reference and pass transistors
(Michell/Trichord).Another interesting device is the TL-431 shunt regulator,
which kindof works with the rails caps instead of against them.As usual, simplicity pays off, and it is well worth investigating
whether something like a hybrid power supply (active for the
bass, passive though high-quality capacitors for mid and treble)
isn't the best-sounding solution.Especially for those circuits where the power supply really is
smack in the signal path ...
