Re: an e-mail to Thorsten about Tweeters and woofers.

Thanks T:

If I really feel that my speakers sound right, i won't care what you've said at all. So, please read on.

I am bewildered. I've believed in "main stream high-end audio" for a long time thinking that my system must sound good although I know something is wrong from my speakers. I was happy for my new speakers only for a short while. My first speakers were Bose. Good clarity in mid but nothing else is there. I was happy for like three days, and my happiness was mainly from the look of the speakers. I quickly added tweeters and power woofers too the system. But nothing was right.

I started to use Seas for my first DIY project. I was a proud DIYer in front of my friends, but I absolutely hated my first project although Seas sounded much better than Bose.

Then Peerless, Vifa and SS were used in my projects. I tried to be happy about them, but deep down in my soul, I was screaming. Are there any DIYers hating there design and like to talk about it? I am not saying that they sound bad, they just cannot strike a chord with my heart. Just not right.

Finally, I try to love the "famous" "expansive" and "well recommended" speakers will SS drivers. This time, I am completely frustrated. They do not sound right even thought I like the transparency. Everybody is saying that SS are the best. How can I not to love them? I am a newborn audiophile-only two years old, but I am having a low self-esteem like a teenager in this strange audio world. I heard or read most of the problems you've mention. Just hate to admit that. I biamp my system without passive crossovers, and they still don't sound right.

Will Lowther promise me the same thing--High hope in the beginning and a long deep slop straight to hell?

After some thinkings and readings from Dick O. (something).

I was thinking about a design with one Lowther driver combined with one T and one W. Lowther will have no crossover, or maybe just a resister to match the impedance with T and W. T will have a simple 1st order crossover at 5k Hz or above, and the W will have 150 Hz 1st order crossover (or below150Hz). Both T and W will be in a parallel circuit with one Lowther Driver. Both Lowther and W will have their own ported cabinets, and the Lowther will be on the center of the cabinet to unify the sound field from Lowther, T and W. This is still a simple design. The cross over will be a piece of cake; a cabinet for a W will be easy, but don't know how to build a cabinet for Lowther yet. Will check it out soon. I will have a short trip to Chicago. Talk to you on Monday.

I haven't given up my MTM design with 9900 and 8530k01. But I kind of know what they will sound like already. Am I kidding myself?

Do you know where I can listen to Lowther speakers? I live in Urbana/IL, 61802.

You say that Lowther is good. Well, I don't think they can be really good without a T. Please don't tell me that a 5 or 6 inches driver will vibrate perfectly at 15k Hz.
