All wood needs to be primed before painting in almost all cases. Depending on the final look will also depend on how nice the primer or base coat is applied. Let say you want a high gloss finish, the easiest way to achieve that goal is to use vanish or polyurethane for a base coat unti the base coat is super smooth. Using this technique will allow you to use less top coats. Of course you need to polish each individual coats with at least 600 girt wet and dry and paper. You can use rotten stone powder for your final polish. I specialize in Historical Restoration and have a ton of experiences in finishes
