bryan,You can find a special primer by Plastic-Kote at various Auto-shops. It's thicker/sprays thick and works itself into the MDF. It comes in Black, Burgandy and Gray and when you're there you can also choose many of the available paint colors/finishes.
I would choose the Black, Burgandy colors to prime because of the contrast to the MDF. It will be easier to notice if you sanded too much primer off. Depending on the size of the project you may need alot of primer to cover everything evenly. I would say 2 cans is good to start. Also check your primer/paint spray tips as "fine tips" are sometimes used and when covering lots of area you'll notice uneven strokes when painting and also it will take longer On the average the right spraytip will be included. Repeated medium coats and light sanding should work.
Good Luck,
Joven
