unless you have a lot to paint, Krylon Sandable spray primer does a really good job. put several light coats and sand (400 grit), then another coat, sand, then a final coat, sand it.then paint or if you used the Black primer, leave it. it gets a simi-gloss look after a while of use.
i've used this technique refinishing furniture, kitchen cabinets, speaker cabinets, and other stuff.
