I've tried granite, Brightstar and don't like either.

I must agree with you that granite sounded bad used under my components, further confirming my past experience that the sonic signature of a material for shelf closely resembles how it feels and sounds to touch and finger knocking. Granite sounded like it felt--hard, cold, and A-musical. I also have Brightstar Big Rock, and unfortunately, I don't like this, either, under components. When you tap the Brightstar with your knuckle after being filled with sand, you get a dead "thunk," which means it's working well to damp vibrations, but this thunk does not sound musical. Music sounds dead as well and over-damped, becoming darker, less lively. Music, after is composed of vibrations. I actually ended up using wood panels that sounded most musical to me when I tapped it with my knuckle, with a kind of acoustic sound. I use symposium rollerblocks on top of the wooden shelf and combo of BDR and polycrystal under the shelf, after experimenting with which combo of cones/rollers sounded the best. A lot of work but worth it...
