I know very little about horns and their design so can't comment on any of that. But I did know Sam Saye.
But first, Dr. Bruce Edgar came down to make presentations to our San Diego Music and Audio Guild at least twice. He struck me as a gentle and very knowledgable person on many aspects of audio, particularly design theory for horn systems. He was able to explain theories and principles in a way even dummies like me could understand.
Sam lived in a suburban community to San Diego. I met him through another audio buddy. He had built a smallish studio at the back of his property and claimed multiple musicians had come down from LA to record there. He also said he had worked in various LA studios for years but chose not to live there.
Aside from recording Sam spent time modifying various audio components, with a particular interest in AR speakers. This seems to be at odds with the OPs mention of work with horn systems.
I will say however that Sam had one of most impressive playback systems I ever heard. The problem was it was all hidden behind a curtain, including the speakers. He played some studio tapes of big band jazz he claimed were first generation. The sound waves from that system literally flapped my pant legs! Spatial presentation, dynamics, and tonal accuracy were the closest to live performance that I ever heard. I suspected that might have been a horn system but Sam wouldn't say.
However I lost contact with him decades ago. Hope this reminiscence is not too off topic.
