That is quite a list of good speakers, I've owned Spendor SP1/2e which was one of my favorites, but the soundstage stayed very low and the sound always sounded like it was coming out of the box. I think the S8's are better designed. I've owned Focals, big ones in the $4K range, can't remember the model and don't want to. The standing joke is that they are "Very Detailed" translating to rip your ears off bright. And with a tube amp! I've also owned Audio Physic's Virgos great great soundstage, could never get close to the midrange magic of the Maggies, the newer ones may be better??? I've heard just about every other speaker made at the RMAF show in Denver over the last 3 years. 80% of them are "Very Detailed" and just not my cup of tea. Others disagree and I respect that. Last year the Quatro really got my attention (using Ayre amps) they certainly weren't the best "Audiophile" speakers at the show, but they were the ones I enjoyed the most, and the ones I wanted to stay and listen to. So that started my investigation of Vandy and the 3a's.
All of this don't make me an expert, I just finally realized that I am happier with a musical speaker then the latest audiophile speaker of the week.
On the 1.6's, I have Mye stands on them, it helps a lot, and I anticipated the crossover argument. I agree, it would improve them, and I am certainly capable of doing that. But as said here in another post, I think I am tired of constantly tweaking and moving the 1.6's to try and compensate for their weakness's. For the price though, the 1.6 can not be beat! I certainly don't want to bash the maggies in any way shape or form. I use all Maggies in the HT and it is awesome. On a Denon receiver! Tremendaous value. I'll always own a pair of Maggies. When the wife isn't looking, I'll be looking to get a second system set up with my MG12's.
