Harbeth HL-P3 series (P3, P3ES or P3ES-2), designed to succeed the legendary BBC LS3/5a (also a good choice incidentally), or if you can relax the requirement for speakers being no more than 1 meter from the back wall, the original Quad ESLs. I have the P3ES, LS3/5a and the Quads, all three have that magical midrange, natural highs and the Quads defined transparency for the longest time. All three are classics, by Herb Reichart's definition, speakers which have been in production for many years and retain their value because they are MUSICALLY satisfying. I like the Quads the best, followed by the Harbeths and the LS3/5a. My Quads are sitting about 4-5 feet out from the back wall (my room is about 14 x 16 feet) and are well within your budget.
