The first British punk record, as I recall, was New Rose by the Damned, not angry at all, a melodic love song.

Sure there was anger in punk, also a lot of humor. Part of the point was that any subject was allowed, so you had such things as X in Los Angeles writing Raymond Chandler flavored lyrics.

It was a big tent and there was a lot more than anger.
