Bands in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts

The Beatle talk below got me thinking about this. Obviously the individual Beatles could not really get the hairs on the neck up like the group as a whole could. So, who else fits that category?
Way too many but I'll suggest Pentangle, all of whom are/were excellent on their own but never rose to any great heights outside the group. Jansch and Renbourne were the 2 greatest acoustic guitarists in England in these days (late 60s). Their solo work just never had the spark that they created when playing off of one another...And McShee with her diamond sharp singing, reminiscent of Grace Slick at times, never did anything worthwhile out of the group. The rhythm section, in ways as good as Fleetwood Mac at times, was a good part of this amazing Folk-Jazz sound that these folks created.
All of their albums are reference quality sound. The CD re -masters are primo too. Sweet Child is where to start and that song is pure genius. Great and powerful music....
Then, there are the Small Faces, but that is for another time.
