Once McComb had hit his stride songwriting, I think there were few around to match him.
From Calenture there is Save What You Can and from The Back Swan, New Year's Greeting both songs to match the yearning of Estuary Bed. Both songs about loss and both can bring a tear to your eye like the Brian Wilson songs you mentioned.
I don't know if you read much from the Lair Of The Red Pony site I wrote about, but for such talent to be snatched away at such a young age and in such a way is one of the great tragedies of music.
To have to have a heart transplant at only 34 is tragedy enough for anyone but his decline was a painful one.
Perhaps one day the tracks with his last band "costar" (named I believe after his dog) will be released and we can see how his future might have looked.
But all we have are these songs and despite the comments of a certain legal beagle I think they are amongst the very best I have ever heard.
