Not only named after a film, as of course was The Goodbye Girl from the same album, this could easily be a kitchen sink British film from the early 60s.
Poignant and quite quite beautiful. It shows how Squeeze were capable of matching LenMac's tales of British life... She's Leaving Home, for example.
