Chris Bell is a huge talent & the driving force behind Big Star. When I first heard "I Am The Cosmos" in the 1990s, I couldn't believe these songs never saw the light of day until their official release by Rykodisc in 1992. Although "I Am The Cosmos" b/w "You & Your Sister" was released as a single in 1977 and attracted some attention, it was commercially shortlived due to Chris Bell's untimely death. Chris Bell had a long bout of depression and was suicidal at times when he finally succumbed in 1978 to a car accident. It was Chris Bell who formed the band and wrote some of the materials found on their debut "#1 Record" LP before Alex Chilton (ex-Box Tops fame) came on board after turning them down a couple of times. It was also believed that Chris Bell's contribution on their 2nd "Radio City" LP was nothing short of momentous eventhough there wasn't a credit to his name. This is an outrage and the greatest unjustness in rock.
I would strongly recommend this CD to any fan who has graduated from Big Star's 3 early LPs with Ardent. I reckoned tunes like "Make A Scene", "Look Up", "Speed Of Sound", "Fight At The Table" & "Better Save Yourself" would have been marvelleous to listen to now as they would be in 1974-77 when they were first recorded.
Be warned, however, of the morbidly depressing effect it could have on the emotionally unstable. Long before Kurt Cobain, there was Chris Bell....
