The problem is people have been conditioned to like what everyone else **appears** to like.... And those other people mostly like the product for the exact same reason.... (This is why Bose speakers are popular.)

It's the Emperor's New Clothes.... People think it's good/bad because those around him say so.... They're afraid to make judgment on their own volition.... But they need not be afraid.

For example, I think Lawrence Welk was a superlative musical performer. And I'd rather judge his music for what I personally think than for what everyone else thinks or wants me to think. Especially when I think those other opinions are based mostly on social acceptance rather than individualistic judgments.

The key is encouraging those you know to try new or obscure music (suggestions welcome), listen on their own, and draw their own conclusions.... (But don't be disappointed if they don't like what you like and vice versa.) And maybe some of them will start searching for music they truly like, as opposed to conveniently going for the music that society dictates they ought to like.
