I think "congealed" is a very apt term for the early 70s rock period. I suppose you could define that era by Elton John and pop music that wasn't particularly daring ( at least in relation to psychedelia, counterculture, and the creative markers of the 60s ). I loved everything from King Crimson to The Ozark Mountain Daredevils during that early to mid 70s period. All told, there was some strong music but it seemed to me that there were too many Blue Swedes, Bo Donaldsons, Terry Jacks, the guys that did "Beach Baby", etc. during that period. To me, the "congealing" was hammered home by those kind of acts. "Dorothy, click your heels together three times...I don't think we're into Wavy Gravy anymore".
