I say Green Day was a good band with great singles (if not albums) until the last rec, which hit me hard enough to have no problem considering them great, period. And I have no problem assigning the 'great' tag to the White Stripes, either, and they're as derivative as the other two, for sure.
I could probably come up with more examples, but that's three off the top of my head for you to chew on.
I'd rather hear something I like done well even if I've heard someone else do it before, than hear something original that I don't like. If most derivative bands suck, it doesn't change the fact that most bands suck, too.
