Growing up on the other coast, Dead Kennedys was and exemplary Punk band- and during the 'Ronny RayGun Years' we LOVED DK!

Holiday in Cambodia was presented in the East as 'Holiday Inn cambodia'
Poking at both the Holiday Inn franchise as well as the Government exploits in SE Asia, and then Latin America...

Having now lived in CA for close to 40 + years, I completely understand your friends' comment on the lack of understanding of the variety that SE Asia means to expats and enthnic people from the region....
Americans can be quite myopic!
