In the early-80s, Bay Area band Dead Kennedy came out with "Holiday In Cambodia," which tried to focus the spotlight on the brutal genocide by the Khmer Rouge.
35 years ago, in early 1989, another Bay Area band, Laaz Rockit did a thrash version of "Holiday In Cambodia."
Sorry, we don't have any photos from 1989. But my friend Siriporn (above, 1990s, Golden Gate Park) who is Thai, stopped in her tracks, when hearing "Holiday In Cambodia." We had a lot of ethnically Vietnamese friends, but hardly any other SE Asians, including Cambodians. Siriporn said that Americans tended to lump all SE Asians together. She pointed out that Vietnam and Cambodia were rivals.
From a music history perspective, "Holiday In Cambodia" is another example of how thrash developed from punk rock.
