Kansas, "Stand Beside Me"

Ah, North Beach Playground. In late 1988, my friends were here, playing softball. While we were up to bat, the boombox played Kansas' "Stand Beside Me." That song seemed to bring us together.

You can't see from the photo above, but off in right field was a swimming pool. After playing softball, we did go to the pool. The girls complained that, in the communal showers, Jules tipped her head back, let water go into her mouth, and then spat it on the floor.

Afterward, we reflected on Kansas' "Stand Beside Me." As much as we liked it, we felt that the band would never, despite their efforts, ever reach or eclipse the heights of "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Dust In The Wind."

Nowadays, because each friend has her own family and life, it's very difficult, to get large numbers together, in order to play softball. So when we do get half a dozen or so together, listening to Kansas' "Stand Beside Me" feels great, harkens back to when we could get larger numbers out.
