35 years ago, my friends had just started the 1988-89 school year. After school, we went out to the volleyball courts. Ken and Skull popped in Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime cassette into the boombox.
We then headed to the Sunset side of Ocean Beach. We laid down a towel, tried to prevent sand from getting on the boombox. After "Revolution Calling" played, Robert wiped his brow, "What was that?"
We hadn't heard music quite like this. Critics would call it "progressive metal." After reading the tiny lyrics, we surmised that "Revolution Calling" was kind of a "Won't Get Fooled Again" for 1988.
Nowadays, we have towels, which don't absorb as much sand. The SHM-CD of Operation: Mindcrime sounds much better than the original cassette, CD, and LP.
