I think all genres, like all musicians, deserve to be judged according to their greatest contributions. It's not fair, for example, to say, "I think John Lennon has no talent, because that 'Walls and Bridges' album really sucks." If you want to evaluate Lennon fairly, you have to begin with his best work, right?Same goes for genres. You have to start with the good stuff. Otherwise, you might hear Kenny G and say, "Man, I really hate jazz." Fact is you need to hear Duke, Miles, etc, before you know what it's all about. Same with rock, hip hop, whatever.
As for country, so many of us who don't really listen to it make the same mistake: we hear Garth and Shania, and assume it's all crap. It's not. It's much more true, I think, to say that country music is great, as evidenced by Hank Williams, the Carter Family, Johny Cash, Merle Haggard, etc, and acknowledge that the current crop of superstars are letting down their tradition.
