I like some sparkle on the top end, especially late at night when I am the only one awake.I am definitely not trying to extract bass that isn't in the recording. And I am not trying to boost it, either. Well, not most of the time. Some recordings are thin. I might boost what's there just to give it a little oomph once in a while, but most likely during waking hours.
But that being said, in my dedicated room, I find that bass veils the highs and upper mids, even at mid-bass frequencies. I have had tinnitus since 2005, and I work in a noisy environment (300mm wafer fab), so my hearing is compromised. But I know what sounds good to me. I can safely say that putting a little sparkle in the highs will make my listening sessions more enjoyable.
