I"m always amused

when folks defend the use of EQ this way:

If you're ever seen a large studio multi-track recording or mixing console, you have seen 3 or 4 band EQ on every individual channel - and it is used.

and then complain about the results. Are/were those engineers who created crappy recordings inept? Deaf? What were they thinking?

I have several (many?) older recordings of major orchestras...

Sure. Most 50s recordings lack first octave bass. As in totally absent. Boosting the crap out of the midbass that is there is NOT the solution. Just makes everything sound unnaturally fat (to these ears) like a teenager cranking the bass control and thinking everything is grand.
