I have a main system in my house that is mainly Ayre stuff. It is fantastically good and so is the price, and on their product list it's still at their lower end. The thing dictating price is how much can you afford and what are you left with if you can't afford it. I was lucky to be able to buy my system straight out...
In my workshop where I spend alot (too much) time fiddling with things I have a small system. The main unit is a Denon UD-M31 and some quite reasonable low end Mission speakers. Being a bit anal about Hi-Fi and tweaks I did spend quite along time setting it in place and positioning the speakers... mains silencer made it's way onto the spur as well...all the usual things. I have to admit that the Ayre is better but I never feel left wanting when listening to the 'cheap' system, and everybody that hears it does mention it's wonderful sound. Maybe synergy or something but it does more than OK and it does the Beatles so well....
Maybe it is a perception of appreciation on a sliding scale.
Just listen and enjoy,
K
