Cognitive dissonance is more closely/typically defined as the feeling of "uncomfortable tension" resulting from holding two conflicting thoughts at the same time. (I don't think "uncomfortable tension" quite rings true when describing listening sessions with mid-fi gear.) Smoking is a good example - people are dissonant with the knowledge/thought of the dangers of smoking as opposed to living a long healthy life - two diametrically opposed thoughts really. But then again, when forced to listen to rap or other so called music permutations, I suppose it can get quite uncomfortable and tense :)
"Willing suspension of disbelief" might be more to the point...and you definitely have to be willing to suspend a lot of disbelief at times, even with pricy gear. Interesting though that (for me anyway)its often easier to suspend belief using lesser gear, because I expect compromised sound, whereas with more expensive gear, I become more heavily disappointed at even the slightest deviation from what the quality of sound I expect to hear - this happens to me quite a bit when trying out different source components and amps - (I'm set with my current speakers).
