Nuts? Perhaps yes...

...but it is a mostly self-inflicted wound. For one thing the industry generally lacks scale, this stuff really should cost a lot less.

For example, there was a CD player that retailed for $1500 and was raved by reviewers placed high in recommended lists. The president of the company told me they were only selling about 15 a month. This unit ought to cost a fraction of what it did, if volumes were not so pitiful.

Why is production on a small scale? Because there are way too many maufacturers. Eg. there are about 500 brands of speakers available in north america alone. Compare that to brands of appliances or cars.

Why are there so many manufacturers? Low barrier to entry, i.e. do not need a huge investment to get started and the technology is not really that complex. But most importantly this is a romantic business, a lot of folks get into it for about the same reasons folks start restaurants and wineries.

What can consumers do? Be very critical of what you spend your money on. If you honestly cannot hear a huge difference then save your money, never mind what others say they hear. And generally fancy aesthetics and "high build quality" add more to material cost than anything else.

Just my $0.02
