Vinyl can go significantly higher. Back in the 70's they had surround vinyl with the back two channels piggy-backed on the front channels from 40KHz up. That's why they developed most of the very fine edged diamonds.
Now, whether any of us can still hear much above 16KHZ is the question. My last ear exam showed some loss beginning at 14 KHZ.
