Hi-Fi is simply short for High Fidelity. H. A. Hartley (of speaker and Hartley oscillator fame) claims to have invented the term in 1929 for an electronics show in which he was exhibiting. Avery Fisher also claims to have coined the term, but later.Regardless of how you define it personally, it was meant to indicate high faithfullness to the original performance-accuracy, in short. Since the term predates stereo, it really had little to do with soundstaging in its origin, but by the late 50's it included steeo as well.
I don't like mid-fi either, but it's a better term to use than hi-fi in my opinion. High Fidelity may be old and obsolete, but it conveys what we're attempting to do. Please don't change the meaning of a good, descriptive term.
