I think that sound localization works the same way regardless of whether you're listening to a stereo or a real sound source. The difference is that with real sound sources, you're usually augmenting what you hear with your vision. But when you're sitting in front of your stereo, your brain has to construct an image without help from your eyes. But we all listen differently, and it's impossible to say whether you're hearing is either good or bad based on one aspect of listening. Some people are more visual listeners than other people. And we all focus on different things. Put 5 audiophiles in front of the same system and one will evaluate the midrange tonal accuracy first, another will concentrate on dynamics and impact, the third will focus on details, the fourth on bass, and the last on imaging. My friends will find flaws in things that I thought were fine and vice versa. That's why we always disagree about what sounds best.
