The PCM1794 uses a delta-sigma modulator unlike....

....the discontinued and highly sought after (by some) PCM1704 which is sign-magnitude.

I had 8 PCM1704 in my Cary 306/200 CDP back in the day. It was a wonderful sounding CDP/DAC. BUT so are the handful of modern ESS and AKM delta-sigma based DACs that I have owned over the years.

IMHO the analog electronics in a CDP/DAC have greater influence over SQ vs the brand or type of DAC chip. Just my 2-cents worth.
