RE: Digital and analog question

Maybe the high-frequency roll-off was done purposely in the digital domain in order to counteract the original digital master tapes that were copied directly from analog master tapes with boosted high-frequencies to accommodate vinyl playback. I remember always hearing how shrill and bright the original CDs were because they used master tapes designed for vinyl playback rather than master tapes with a flat frequency response designed for digital playback.

This is just a guess, though!
