You will find that it takes 2 to tango. Switching transports with the same DAC will yield different results. Switching DACs with the same transport will yield a different result. If one or both of the components are crappy - crappy sound results.
The only difference with a CD player is that the manufacturer/designer selects the spinner and DAC components, and you don't get to change either. That is a 'house sound'.
The cable also matters between the transport and DAC, as well as the cable to the preamp/integrated. That is considering the effective CD player entity - cables everywhere else matter as well, but outside the scope of your question.
