If you look around (try etronics.com or tigerdirect.com), you should be able to find the Pioneer 578 new for around $100.
I bought one to originally use as a cheap transport feeding a Micromega dac ($1K when new/Stereophile Class B). When I first tried the Pioneer as a player only, I was underwhelmed. The Pioneer has a much warmer, smoother tonal balance than any piece of digital gear I have ever heard. Thus, it sounded dull and closed in with the Harmonic Tech cables I normally use. Soundstage was as flat as a pancake. On a lark, I hooked up a pair of DH Labs Silver Sonic cables and to my surprise, the Pioneer sounded much better. It is very close in sound to my Micromega and it sounds better than the Sony SCD-C555es I use as a transport in another system. It's a bit light in the bass and it doesn't image as precisely as the Micromega, but unless I actually sit down and a/b the two, I rarely hear any difference.
I wouldn't be surprised if you would have to spend 10 or more times the price of the Pioneer to significantly beat it.
