. . .then run out and get a Benchmark DAC-1. The Benchmark is very impressive and it's a fair value, even now at $975. It's a good tool for the home recording studio because it has a tendency to hype everything up like the way digital photographs make something look unrealisticly detailed. I still have my DAC-1 in the studio for monitoring tracks that I lay down. I try not to listen for more than a couple of hours at a time because it can be very fatiguing.I would not recommend the DAC-1 for pleasure listening, especially if you think you're already leaning towards an edgy sound. You will be impressed with the bass and detail at first, and then grow tired of it quickly.
I think you should start investigating non oversampling DACs considering everything you mentioned in your post.
