Besides continuous play, general observation and listening:1. How quickly does the player "find" the disk when it is first inserted?
2. You can also see how smoothly/easily it switches from the first track to the last, back to the first, then to a middle, etc.
3. Also check if it plays a variety of different brand CDR (burned) disks easily.
These are all indicators of the laser still being in good shape and properly aligned.
Listen for transport noises. As a mechanical device it is subject to wear and tear over a period of time. The electronics itself should be similar in durability to any amp or preamp, etc.
