I have a Philips 963sa connected to Panny digital amplifier receiver (bi-amping my Silverline sonatinas) with both S/PDIF (a Acoustic Zen Silver Photon) and Toslink (Sound Professionals Glass toslink). I can hear a difference between the two (toslink is better) by switching back and forth.
Something seriously is compromising the Esoteric setup. Please try connecting a changer directly to the Esoteric and using the same interconnect with both the changer and the Esoteric.
