HowdyOne of the details is that tho S/PDIF is designed for audio it sucks in that it's clock is embedded in the data. USB isn't really designed for transfer of audio: you have a choice of reliable data or timely data but not both. To do well with USB you have to be the only device on the bus and write your own drivers. Otherwise you are at the mercy of other traffic on the bus. Also there isn't a high quality clock available on USB. (This is from a theoretical point of view, I don't mean to cast aspersions about any of the growing popularity of USB dacs out there. On the other hand my earlier experience with USB audio and then USB to S/PDIF converters was less than encouraging.)
It seems that you could have the best of both worlds with a USB bus for the data and a S/PDIF like link for the clock and custom drivers to tie them together.
