Hi,My system, which is pretty modest, is listed here. I consider the system to have a somewhat "laid back" sound, mostly because of the speakers. When I got the Benchmark, I bought it at the same time as I got the Squeezebox, and put them both in my system at the same time. So I can't say I've done any kind of controlled experiment with the goal of determining its sound. I wouldn't want to steer you wrong by giving you some view that had no real experiments to back it up. I do use it quite regularly as a headphone amp to drive my Beyerdynamic DT 770 'phones. I haven't noticed any overly clinical type of sound in this configuration.
If you're concerned that the Benchmark might be too clinical, another alternative for the same price is the Lavry Black. Normal operation of this DAC does not use asynchronous sample rate conversion, which some here say causes all kinds of sonic problems, none of which I have experienced. In general though, the idea of high quality pro gear such as the Benchmark and Lavry appeals to me because of the lack of high-end audio hype.
