You should be very suprised at the level of performance.....I have seen the schematics for the 99, from memory the volume is changed in the digital domain. The sound via the fixed output and variable are indistingushable..... my 99cdp feeds a power amp [valve] and sounds much better than the modded quad 77 pre.
