RE: I just don't get power cables

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I'm laid up after some surgery so I've got some time and figured I'd go down the rabbit hole. Unfortunately no real opportunity to do cable swapping. Anyway, building the cables is half the fun.

To get specific on the whole power setup, the amp is on it's own outlet - some kind of premium Audioquest thing. All the rest shares a hospital-grade outlet on the same circuit. Not much I can do about the shared line. Worse, it's a switched circuit so I'll be getting rid if the switch. The line level gear all runs off an ancient TrippLite voltage regulator. Turning on the amp drops voltage enough to activate it. My previous house had terrible instability problems, brownouts, etc. No idea what it does to the sound, if anything.

The amp already has some kind of absurdly huge Audioquest cable, so I'm leaving that alone. For line level cables I'm using DH Labs Encore (3x14 awg, shielded) on the preamp and DAC. The rationale is that they're relatively high current, though this is obviously massive overkill. The rest (phono stuff, CD transport) are getting 3 shielded 18 awg cables twisted together and run in parallel. Sockets/plugs are all some kind of fancy-looking-yet-cheap stuff from Amazon. One of the drivers was also aesthetics. The power cables were all way too long and made a rats nest. Now they'll all be the right lengths and neatly dressed.

So, cumulatively, this all adds up to a potentially significant change. I'm banking on the notion that the Furman will improve the power quality and that the cables will preserve it on its way to the gear. But who knows. Will I hear it? And if so, will it actually be better? Time will tell. But it's giving me a nice little project while I'm stuck inside. :-) I'll report back on the results.
