I had a shootout the other nigt of LP vs. CD and while my records sounded better it wasn't as big a difference as I was expecting. The biggest problem we heard was the hard S's from the TT. 1998 LP12, Akito 2 arm,Goldring Eroica LX mc with .5 mv output and a Musical fidelity XLP-S phono pre. I know the arm, cart. and PP aren't well matched.
My question is which is the worst part of this combo. I know the Akito, even the Akito 2,is not a great arm for MC carts. I have also heard the the musical Fidelity XLP-S isn't well suited for MC carts either. I can't afford a $700. (used ) Ittock arm or a very expensive MC phono pre so I'm guessing a new (used) cart. is the way I should go?
I am looking at a used Dynavector DV-20X-H high output that would feed the MM part of the Phono pre? Trouble is I don't know for sure if it's the MC section of my Musical Fidelity that's causing the sibilance? If anyone has expereince with any of these peices I would really appreciate the feedback.

Follow Ups:
yes that is nuts, but not nearly as nuts as when I called the local Linn dealer and was quoted $500. for a tonearm cable. That's just the cable to DIN plug, not complete arm re-wire. Used arms for Linn are rare and when they do come up they sell for stupid money.

and the arm sure wasn't worth that.I felt It's a good arm at 400-500$ at best. ( assuming its bearing is in a good shape )
A Basik Plus which I gave away to a friend of mine, I thought at the time, the system balance was better than the Ittok in place.

For three years I had a Linn Klyde cartridge (MC) and Akito2 combo and never had real sibilance problems.
As docw pointed out, could be a wrong VTA or wrong cart alignment.VTA is rather difficult to adjust with Akito2. I use the last side of Haydn's The Creation (Karajan), the duo between D. Fisher-Dieskau and Gundula Janowitz, just searching for the lowest level of sibilance.
It is almost certainly neither the fault of the turntable, arm or phonostage. I am unfamiliar with the Eroica but used a Goldring Electro II many years ago. Used a Linn with an Ittok (and later Alphason) for nearly 20 years some of which was with the MF X-LPS.I would buy a Denon DL-103 (which I have used in its 'R' version in an Alphason HRS-100 MCS on the Linn), as a cost effective solution; make sure alignment is very precise and banish sibilance and end of record distortion, for good!
Align and clean your cartridge (I assume you checked first). Then if this is still an issue, agree with risabet.Dynavector is well regarded here. As is Ortofon higher range and Denon DL 103 in its varied forms.
Folks here will recommend AT 440MLa. It depends on budget, but a used Shure V15 III with SAS Jico stylus, an ADC XLM Mk II or III or a V15VMR or VxMR all can be ways to deal with this. Or try a Sumiko BPS improved or EVO III for newer carts.

ok, looks like mistarcking has the most votes, which is good because it means I don't have to spend even more money : ) I will check everything again and see what I find.

I think you've narrowed your problem to the arm/cartridge interface. Assuming setup is correct the Akito isn't a really MC friendly arm. I would try one of the better MM carts like a Grado or even a Shure and see if that cures it. Good Luck.
that's the dilemma, I haven't narrowed it down to any particular part for sure. I think it might be this or that but who the heck knows without spending hundreds of dollars. I've already don that trying to match an amp to my speakers and no success yet with that either.
I do know it's set-up properly and playing a test LP confirmed it. I am leary of Grado's and the Shure is scary beacuse you can't get the Boron cantilvered stylus anymore.
I was hoping someone who has this arm would respond and let me know what they wasted their money on and what finally worked LOL. Where are all the Linn guys, I thought the LP12 was still popular here?

that sold them briefly (long story). Fair enough about the Grado and the Shure, I am not really familiar with any other MM carts but many here should be able to point you in the right direction, but it won't be free!

*Where are all the Linn guys, I thought the LP12 was still popular here?*
Majority owns an LP12 there and some helpful tips from experienced Linn Dealers.
Ask your question there.

looks like a web-site dedicated to Naim, which appears to be a company that sells everything from embroiderd jackets to CD players. Why would all the Linn owners be there? I'm more confused than ever, was there a falling out with the Linn crown and AA? I've been away for a while and haven't followed this forum closely.

It is indeed a company funded site.Even tho, they parted with Linn years ago, when it comes to an analogue front end, there are still many LP12 users there.
Sorry I don't have any experience with an Akito, but a used Itok for 700$?
