I just played my Reference recordings Nojima Plays Liszt. Side 2 is 30.5 minutes which is longer than most LPs have on a side. There must be more grooves per inch yet it sounds good.I guess when the cutting engineer is doing an acetate he can set the pich to what he likes best for either sound or trying to fit a lengthy passage on one side.
Follow Ups:
There is a preview head that looks at the intensity of the music ahead of the signal being fed to the cutting stylus; and groove spacing is varied accordingly. Consequently, louder passages get more groove spacing than quieter passages. This enables the maximum length of time to be cut into the master lacquer.
