I've got this weird kind of distortion that occurs... since I am new to high-end vinyl playback, I believe this is a limitation of my current table/arm setup: Kenwood KD-550, stock arm, Stanton 881S cartridge. Here is a link to an MP3 clip of what it is I am trying to fix. This seems to happen regardless of the disc I use. The distortion only happens during "busy" music passages or passages with a vocal chorus, as you will hear in the clip.
What is really strange is that during the musical passages, the quality of the sound is fantastic. The bass, the wah-wah, the hats, the snares, it's all perfectly smooth and sounds fantastic. Just these damned vocals, when they peak, get all muddy and distorted.
I know some of you view disco music as heresy for some of you, so don't crack on the material please. :)
My question is: is this a result of my fairly low-end equipment? My phonostage is a Monolithic PS1 and HC1 power supply, and it is properly configured for this catridge with correct gain setting. I am 100% certain of this.
(FYI: The clip is from Le Pamplemousse's "Sweet Magic" LP, circa 1978. The song is titled "Can't Hide It (I Came Here To Dance)". Got this little number dusty and ragged from Goodwill for $0.25 -- she cleaned up pretty nice, IMO!)
Thanks!

I could guess at a couple things causing similar symptoms. One of the easiest to check is to use a scale to double check your tracking force. I've had cartridges that had problems with complex female vocals (with everything else sonically tracking well). When tracking force was raised 0.25 grams to the vendor recommended force, the probem went away. During set-ups I try running at a slightly lower tracking forces - seen this sensitivity with a Promethian (Seneca modified Grado), and a Clearaudio Wood Virtuoso.
How old is your stylus ?
Age wise, about 6 years. How many hours of play? I was out of vinyl for a while... I'd say about 60-70 hours tops. The tip is clean as well.
For starters my guess is a slight VTA adjustment which should get rid of the sibelence, check the FAQ for details, lots of great info
and accumulated wisdom and experience.
