I just bought one of these last month and have been experimenting. In my area it's doing fabulous (SF Bay) in all directions even when it's only 1.5' off the ground! Will eventually get it in the attic.Visit Brian Beezley's site on FM antennas for the full scoop on this one, many other standard designs, and tweaks. Well worth reading.
Try this for $25 and return it if unsatisfied. Mine isn't going back to the store!

Follow Ups:
We lived in the South Bay for a couple of years (my first real job, in Sunnyvale). I won't pay money to watch TV :-) so we used an outdoor antenna. Reception was excellent; many many stations with good signals on TV and FM. I assumed all the antennae were on mountains somewhere.
They mostly are, but mountains also get in the way, plus lots of radio signals all over the busy Bay, plus buildings and the distance from the transmitters. All conspire to make what should be terrific much less so.I use cable for TV, so used to use an old attic mounted RS TV combo antenna. That worked but was intermittently problemmatic. With the new RS FM specific antenna it works brilliantly and consistently and better than ever! I'm very satisfied.
