Gee, that IS bad! I had no idea EICO had such poor products. Some other EICO designs I've seen seemed quite good, like the ones using EF86 and 6SN7 (HF35 or HF60?). But this one really SUCKS!

Poor Ray,I can relaibly count on you to ALWAYS miss the boat and stub your toe!!
Have you ever owned and heard this unit ? "NO" is the answer.... I am sure. 'Think you can look at a schematic - and actually tell how a vintage piece will sound??
But Ray ............this is really NOT about the Eico HF-81!! Thats just a foolish "smoke screen" by Mikey and seconded by Tre', who fail to address the real topic, because it is beyond Mikey's training in school.
The whole point of my original post has been missed so far, by ALL the posters to date on this forum.

**** The main point is that we need HIGH QUALITY 12 to 10 gauge wire to capture ALL the music and keep it intact inside the amp, when the tube stage idles at 1 mA. or less.**** It is SO clearly audible.

That is NEW information in audio, not in any E.E. textbook is it?
Chew on that for awhile, my good DIYer friends.
In a word: YES!It's a gift I share with most inmates here - I say that with all modesty.

a better design will beat it 100% of the time.
Design always trumps tweaks IMO.> > It is SO clearly audible.
Everything is audible on a good system.
Power Cords, ICs, isolation feet, AC Filters
Electrolytic vs Metallized vs Film and Foil caps
Vintage NOS vs Newer NOS vs Current Production tubes
A good design will give you better results than
tweaking a poorly chosen loadline design IMO.
That is the point you are missing.
....just need more time to try things, like that phono stage.
Jeff, you are the one missing the point. With a circuit as bad as the HF-81 (and yes, we can tell that just by "looking at the schematic") there is no way you can make any real conclusions about wire or anything else. You are fooling yourself. But we have come to expect that from you.Have fun with your wire. :-)
